Frequently Asked Questions About Leash Walking Basics

Zoie Keast teaches all leash walking packages, in fact it’s her favorite thing to teach! Zoie is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) with 12 years of experience training dogs and managing behavior programs in animal shelters throughout Colorado, Nevada, and Wyoming. Zoie is the head trainer at Not A Bully Dog Training’s Colorado Springs location.

The first session is always in your home, as great walks start before you even leave your house! After the first session, we can meet at your favorite park, trail, or neighborhood.

When you purchase a leash walking package, you can schedule the three sessions any time you like! We recommend you space the sessions 2 weeks apart. But we also know how busy everyone can get, especially in the summer! So if once a month works best, or if you want to be able to schedule just when you need some extra help, it makes no difference to us!

Sure! But only one dog per session. We also ask that no children come along under the age of 12, unless theres another adult to tag along as well.

Understanding the difference between leash reactivity, aggression, and hyperactivity is not easy. The Leash Walking Basics Package is for dogs that may bark, jump around, pull, and react toward other dogs or people; but can be distracted away from them. This is mostly hyperactivity and a little bit of reactivity.

If you find that your dog is putting a lot of effort into trying to get to other dogs or people, or it is near impossible for you to distract them, you may be dealing with reactivity. If your dog has even gotten into a fight with another dog (regardless of who was the aggressor) or has knocked you down, you’re likely dealing with some advanced reactivity or aggression.

But we can still help! Give us a call or book a private session to receive an individualized training plan for you and your dog’s specific needs.

We always like to start with 3-sessions, as that will give you a good foundation to work off of. Remember, training is a daily practice, so the more you utilize the techniques we practice in sessions, the more success you will see.

But you can always purchase another package or single sessions whenever you would like!

Training is a personal experience based on the goals and relationship you have with your dog. There is no “one size fits all” approach to training. We are committed to finding success that works for both you and your dog. If you aren’t happy with the progress we’re making, or no longer align with our training approach,  please let us know.
